Collecting Something Different

What should I collect?  Have you ever wanted to collect something a bit different? Something that is older,  not too pricey to start but the sky's the limit if you want it to be? I have 3 suggestions for you and are all great places to start your own antique collection. Antique Stick Pins, Antique Tiles and Vintage Glass Paperweights.

Collect Antique Stick Pins

Just look at this lovely lot, aren't they beautiful? The selection here is all from the Victorian and Edwardian eras and are made with gold finials. You can see just a few of the vast range available and why they make such an interesting collection. Particularly look out for ones with animals and insects on the head. Or perhaps you like sport so a collection of sports-related ones would be for you. There's more about stick pins here and also a carefully curated selection for you to buy.

Collect Antique Tiles

Have you seen genuine antique tiles? Like stick pins, there is a huge range and variety for you to go for. The vast majority are 6 x 6 inches but you can also find them in 4 x4 and 8 x 8 inches as well as occasional oversized tiles. There is such a huge range available that it would be a good idea to start with a theme, age, country or maker. Victorian flower tiles are still relatively inexpensive and look wonderful displayed on a shelf. You can even set them into a floor if you like. Watch out I am going to talk more about tiles in the future.

Collect Vintage Glass Paperweights

Vintage glass paperweights are beautiful. Antique ones are too but they tend to be a bit rare and expensive for the beginner collector. You can pick paperweights up from a couple of pounds in a charity shop or on a car boot sale. Look at loads and learn what you like, only buy them if they are in good condition with no chips or scratching to the main surface. Rubs underneath on the surface the paperweight sits on are quite acceptable and often these are a sign of age. I love the way paperweights sparkle like gems in the light and will be delving deeper into them soon.

Special Scottish Silver Brooch - Ola Gorie

I wantd to show you this special brooch - It is available from my website shop at http://www.antiquesavenue.co.uk/ where a kind shopper noticed it and let me know that it was designed and made by a lady called Ola Gorie in the Orkney Islands , Scotland. The brooch has the initials OMG which are her trademark and it also has full silver hallmarks. I've visited Ola Gories website hoping to find out a bit more about the design which I suspect is taken from a similar Scandinavian design I have seen. It appears that she is not currently selling a piece of jewellery in this design.  This brooch appears to have two birds ( Doves or Love Birds?) sitting in a tree eating small fruit such as cherries.  Do you know the tradidiotnal design this is based on? Please do get in touch I would love to know.

porcelain plaques for antique brooches

You can often find older brooches , especially Victorian brooches, set with porcelain plaques which have been painted or printed. These brooches are quite decorative and very collectible . Try looking out for some with classical European paintings: Hand painted with Birds brooch : Or how about a collection of hand painted vintage floral brooches? These three types of vintage brooch all have the inset porcelain plaque in common. They vary in age with the top one being mid- Victorian , the central one being later Victorian and the lower one being an Edwardian brooch. All should be treated with reasonable care as porcelain chips easily and the pictures would come off if they are subjected to harsh cleaning materials. How should you clean them - hopefully a gentle wipe with a soft dry cloth. If this doesn't work a well wrung out damp cloth or just a touch of washing up liquid if really necessary. Do not let the damp get to the setting if you can help it as most likely the settin
